First Light
This house will burst with
the heat
of worry. A messenger spins over clicking trees,
swoops to the window. Following her shadow,
a phoebe stuns itself on the glass. Two words
sit in the back
of your throat, arms akimbo:
Want joy. No subject, so they stay in the trap.
No
matter. Birds of pure red, blue and yellow
catch themselves in flight. Odd. Makes you think
of the ballet
at the end of An American in Paris. Minnelli
took a chance we would sit though all that dancing.
Try to find that fountain now. To wash off
this heat of worry. Open the door. Tuck your knees
to your chest, make yourself into a ball. Roll down
the hill to the river. You have been a Catherine wheel
of imagination long enough. Break the bonds.
Keep going. Get to the river. Uncoil. Bark. Dive in.
